Did you know that people are messing with s’mores? Last year my friend Shannon blew me away when she suggested we make s’mores with miniature peanut-butter cups. I was fascinated and a bit horrified all at the same time.
Can you even call them s’mores if they’re not made with graham crackers, a Hershey’s chocolate bar and a toasted marshmallow? They only have three ingredients. Changing one of the main players is kind of like making a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich with ham.
But the world of s’mores is apparently changing. Last weekend we visited Lake Crescent with a group of high-school exchange students and D started up the camp fire.
D honed his fire-building skills while working as a bellman/houseman at the Salish Lodge in Snoqualmie. Minutes after he built this kindling teepee he burned all the hair off of his knuckles, just like he used to do at the Salish.
But it was worth it. Look at all those marshmallows! Apparently after I went to bed there were some swinging, flaming marshmallows. I’m glad I avoided that. I had a hard enough time when I found out we weren’t making s’mores with graham crackers and chocolate bars.
Instead we were using these:
Fudge-Striped Shortbread. It’s an ingenious way to pack light because– get ready– it eliminates the need for the chocolate bar.
This might have been better with a chocolate bar.

Flavored marshmallows! Now I’m really worried about the future of s’mores.
Actually it sounds delicious.

there aren’t enough hours in the day to check out all the foodie websites/blogs; am I in heaven??? those s’mores look mighty tempting, but definitely not while I’m on WW

This is a really good idea. I’d have never thought of it. Plus, it prevents all the left over graham crackers from getting stale in the cupboard. I can never get anyone to eat them when they’re not part of s’mores! Now that I’m thinking of it, have you seen those chocolate covered graham crackers…Oooooo!

It has been too long since I last had a smore and a camp fire. It brings back memories.

Your peanut butter discussion triggered a memory of our French friend and a long-ago camping trip. Besides a deep-seated loathing for peanut butter, he was also marshmallow-phobic. On the same camping trip, our fellow Americans brought along marshmallows; when he tried a toasted marshmallow he said “it’s like eating a jelly fish.”

Hmmm, the Fudge Stripe cookies are an interesting idea…
I just printed off recipes for homemade graham crackers and homemade marshmallows that I’m going to try out later on this week. (With Hershey bars–I’m a purist, too.)
BRING ON THE S’MORES!

We’ve tried them with pb cups, too–SO good! I love the shot of all the marshmallows in the fire.

Mmmmm peanut butter cups. I’m definitely going to give that a try at our yearly Canada Day weenie roast. I usually get the chocolate covered graham crackers to avoid the chocolate bar step.
